Our Legacy Since 1998

Founded in 1998 by master craftsman Arjun Mehta, Mumbai Indie Studio began as a small workshop in the bustling lanes of Dadar, Mumbai. What started with three artisans crafting custom doors and windows has evolved into a renowned atelier employing over 80 skilled craftsmen, designers, and sustainability experts.

We specialize in creating bespoke wooden furniture, intricate architectural elements, and decorative artifacts that blend traditional Indian woodworking techniques with contemporary design sensibilities. Our philosophy is rooted in three core principles: uncompromising quality, sustainable sourcing, and preserving the unique character of each timber species.

Every project we undertake is a collaboration. We work closely with architects, interior designers, and homeowners across India and internationally to bring visions to life. Our portfolio includes luxury residential projects in Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore, hospitality installations for boutique hotels, and corporate offices seeking warm, natural aesthetics.

Sustainable Sourcing

We use only FSC-certified wood and reclaimed timber, ensuring zero contribution to deforestation.

The Craftsmanship Process

Each creation undergoes a meticulous 14-step journey from raw timber to finished masterpiece.

1. Timber Selection

We hand-select each plank based on grain pattern, density, and moisture content. Only 30% of sourced wood meets our standards.

2. Kiln Drying

Wood is slowly dried in computer-controlled kilns to achieve optimal 8-10% moisture content, preventing future warping.

3. Design & Planning

Our designers create detailed CAD drawings and full-scale templates, considering joinery, wood movement, and aesthetics.

We employ time-tested joinery methods that ensure structural integrity without relying solely on adhesives or metal fasteners. These include:

  • Dovetail Joinery: Used for drawer construction, creating incredibly strong interlocking corners.
  • Mortise and Tenon: The backbone of frame construction, allowing for wood movement while maintaining strength.
  • Japanese Kumiko: Delicate lattice work for screens and panels, assembled without nails.
  • Butterfly Keys: Decorative yet functional reinforcements for tabletop splits.

Each joint is hand-cut, test-fitted, and adjusted for a perfect fit that will last generations.

Our finishing process involves up to seven layers of hand-applied natural oils, waxes, or lacquers, each sanded between coats. We use:

  • Traditional Linseed Oil: Penetrates deep, enhancing grain while providing protection.
  • Natural Beeswax Polish: Creates a soft, matte sheen that improves with age.
  • Food-Safe Finishes: For kitchen items and children's furniture.
  • UV-Resistant Outdoor Oils: For exterior pieces, reformulated yearly based on Mumbai's monsoon conditions.
